Unknown gunmen shot dead two policemen on duty at a checkpoint and another civilian in the Ozuoba axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Tuesday night.

The gunmen, who were said to have driven straight to the checkpoint in a saloon car, hurriedly fled the scene after the attack, which was said to have lasted not more than two minutes.

A source said the police started mounting checkpoint in the area about two years ago after a businessman coming from Aba was killed by hoodlums.

The source added that the shooting caused a stampede in the area as the few motorists that were still on the road during the incident struggled to flee the scene of the attack.

When contacted, the Spokesman of the Police command, Nnamdi Omoni, a DSP, confirmed that gunmen opened fire on policemen on duty in the late hours of Tuesday, but noted that he was not in a position to give an update on the efforts being made to apprehend the perpetrators.

Omoni, however, said that the police was working with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area and another team to track down the killers and bring them to justice.

He said: “Yes, there was an incident on Tuesday night where two policemen and a man were killed by gunmen, but I cannot give you the details of the progress we have so far made because I am yet to get the full details.”
