A 32-year-old scavenger, identified only as Nura, has been arrested for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl at Dei-Dei, an Abuja suburb. A member of a vigilante group, who preferred anonymity said the incident happened at about 6:12 p.m. at Layin Yan Bola in the area on Sunday.
He said the accused, allegedly lured the girl with a token into a make shift wooden kiosk, after she returned from his errand to buy sachet water for him from a nearby shop.
He said the girl’s mother, a food vendor in the area, raised an alarm, after the girl failed to return home.
He said someone then told her that the scavenger sent her on an errand.
“A neighbour saw the girl when the suspect sent her to buy pure water after she took food to him. The woman then decided to ask the suspect but found the girl naked inside the kiosk,” he said.
He said on seeing the girl, the woman’s scream attracted people to the scene.
“Some vigilante members were invited and they arrested the suspect and took him to the police station in the area,” he said.
City News further gathered that a similar incident happened a month ago, when a 14-year-old banana hawker in the area was raped.
Effort to speak with the Divisional Police Crime Officer in the area was not successful, but a police officer confirmed the incident, saying the suspect would be charged to court when investigation was concluded.
