Trader Kills 3-month-old Pregnant Woman Over N2m Debt

A three-month-old pregnant woman, Mrs Kudirat Oduola, has been allegedly murdered by one Kafayat Oriekun,a trader at Gbagi market in Ibadan, over two million naira debt.

The woman’s elder brother, Mr Abdulahi Asimolowo, told newsmen in Ibadan on Thursday that both the deceased and the accused were traders at Gbagi market that deal in buying and selling of textile products.

Asimolowo said that it was a common practice among traders at Gbagi Market to borrow money without interest to buy goods whenever any of the traders was travelling to buy goods and does not have sufficient fund. He said that Oriekun borrowed the deceased a sum of two million naira which was refunded after five months and Oriekun insisted that she would collect interest on the said amount.

According to Asimolowo, Oriekun insisted that she would collect a sum of N400,000 per month as interest from the deceased.

Asimolowo said that Oriekun threatened the deceased to consider herself a walking corpse when the deceased refused and insisted that she would not pay interest.

He said that the deceased later agreed to pay the amount when she could no longer bear the threat by Oriekun.

Asimolowo said that it got to a stage when the deceased was fed up with paying N400, 000 as interest monthly and told Oriekun that she could no longer pay any interest.

He said that on May 19, Oriekun, allegedly sent some thugs to attack the deceased, thereby assaulting her and the thugs ran away when they discovered that the deceased has collapsed.

The deceased elder brother said that the assault caused serious bodiy harm and fatal injury on the deceased womb which resulted in her losing three months old pregnancy. He said that the deceased was rushed to a private hospital at Olodo area where she was hospitalized and later transferred to police  hospital at Eleyele. Asimolowo said that the deceased was later transferred to University

College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan and died on July 9 at the hospital. He said that Oriekun had been arrested by the police and presently in their custody.
