The Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, has assured the new Inspector General of Police (I-G), Ibrahim Idris, of traditional leaders’ support in fighting crime in the country.

He gave the assurance when he received Idris, who is from the Emirate, at his Wadata Palace on Friday in Bida.

Abubakar said traditional leaders would continue to exploit their closeness to the people at the grassroots to preach peace, fish out criminals, as well as ensure punishment for ill manners.

He added that “the Nigeria Police has been playing significant role toward getting rid of criminal behaviours in every nook and cranny of the country.

“I assure you of my emirate and the entire Bida peoples’ continued support in carrying out your responsibilities. One as a loyal and worthy son and as an effective and efficient officer.”

The monarch said the doors of the palace would remain open to the police boss, as well as officers and men of the Force for advice in the fight to keep the state and the country safe.

He urged the new I-G to be proactive in ensuring that security challenges facing the country were reduced under his watch.

He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing his kinsman to pilot the Nigerian police and urged the new inspector-general not to betray the confidence reposed in him.

Earlier, Idris had told the royal father that the visit was to seek for his blessings as he too was from the Nupe kingdom, “considering the importance of traditional institution in the country.”

He pointed out that the police would always collaborate with traditional rulers in carrying out its functions “because they are the custodians of the society.”

The police chief then appealed to the emir to strengthen the relationship between the emirate and the command in order to achieve a crime-free society. (NAN)
