Normalcy appears to be returning to the University of Port Harcourt, as Professor Ndowa Laale has resumed his position as Vice Chancellor of the institution.

The development marks the end to his suspension by the Governing Council of the institution over the recent unrest by students, which claimed the life of one person, and forced the university to close down for over one month.

DAILY POST reports that Professor Laale, who returned to work on Friday, was received by a cheering crowd of students and staff of the university.

It was also gathered that the development is based on the intervention of the Federal Government, with a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education, dissolving the Governing Council of the University.

It was also revealed that the Minister of Education had earlier issued a previous statement, directing the Governing Council headed by Gesi Asamaowei, as Pro-Chancellor, to reinstate Professor Lale, but the directive was not carried out.

Speaking shortly after his return to work, the Vice Chancellor said it only took a little time for truth to prevail.

Professor Laale maintained that his suspension by the governing council was illegal, stressing that it was orchestrated by few individuals in the school management.

He said, “In any part of this world, what is important is to stick to that which is right. Sometimes truth can be difficult to hear. The truth is open and it will always pave the way for justice.

“As you can see, I am addressing you in my office. Indeed, I am back to my office.”

The Deputy Registrar in charge of Public Relations at the University, William Wodi, confirmed the receipt of the directive from the Ministry of Education, dissolving the Governing Council and reinstating Professor Ndowa Laale as Vice Chancellor.

Wodi said the letter had also been published in some national dailies to notify the public on the latest developments.
