President Muhammadu Buhari has raised alarm that Niger Delta militants are deploying high-tech weapons to destroy oil installations in the restive region. Speaking at the State House in Abuja yesterday at a Ramadan dinner with leaders of the All Progressives Congress, Buhari said: “The technology being deployed by the militants to destroy oil installations is high tech, the way they can go on high sea and international waters and target oil installations is a national problem. It’s affecting development. No insurance company will want to insure installations that will end up being blown up and no banks will want to finance such installations.”
The president said he did not know how many factions the militants were in the Niger Delta. He noted that Nigeria was in a very difficult time, saying the nation had to organise itself. According to him, “Anybody that says he/she has any other country than Nigeria should go out and see.” He also stressed the need to stabilise the nation’s economy and create jobs. “I agonise over these things,” he added.

Buhari said the successful conduct of the All Progressive Congress (APC) primaries in Edo State gave him a new hope, adding that “We are going to watch Ondo very closely. We have to ensure that the vote of the people counts.”
Earlier, APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun said the party was pleased with Buhari’s achievements so far, especially the strong leadership he had provided.
Oyegun admitted that Nigeria was undergoing a challenging time, noting that “Any meaningful development requires strong and determined leader. Things must change. Those things don’t come easily. Nigeria is clearly a difficult nation to govern,” he said.
Also present at the event included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Ghali Naaba, APC Deputy National Chairman (South) Segun Oni and former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva,
