Two soldiers and five civilians are feared dead on Wednesday night at Ejere creek, a suburb of Warri during a fierce clash between soldiers and some assailants.
Ejere creeks is a stone throw from Omadina, an Itsekiri enclave in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. Tribune Online gathered that the assailants reportedly stormed a military house boat stationed around Ejere creek at about 8:00 p.m and allegedly opened fire on the soldiers on duty.
The assailants, who were said to have caught their victims unawares, were said to have stormed the area with five speed boats before carrying out the lethal attack.
However, a senior officer in the Nigerian Navy, who also confirmed the tragedy, told Tribune Online that the incident occurred Wednesday evening at oil-rich Bennet Island in the local government, adding that Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) should be prime suspects.
As of the time of filing this report, Tribune Online, could not ascertain from the 3 Battalion, Nigerian Army, Effurun, if members of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) were involved in the confrontation.
But a senior military source, who confirmed the incident, said no fewer than five civilians lost their lives in the fracas while the military lost two of its colleagues.
The source said one of the soldiers died on the spot of the fracas while the other one died later. “It is true that we were attacked by some civilians yesterday night and seven persons, five civilians and two soldiers died in the incident.
“One of our colleagues died on the spot, while the other one died later,” the source noted. According to the source, who declined being mentioned, “We rushed him to the Delta Teaching Hospital, Oghara, but were told that they are on strike and we rushed him back trying to save his life but unfortunately, he died.”
It was gathered that some faceless civilians had earlier attacked the military booth at Ejere area. The Wednesday assailants were said to have opened fire on the soldiers on duty, killing two and losing five of their members.
