The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase says the country is a hostile policing environment where the expectations of the public exceed the resources and support available to the force.

“Failures on the part of the police are easily observed and widely reported and condemned while achievements of the police are rarely recognized,” Mr. Arase who delivered a public lecture on policing at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), said.

He added, “The police are in constant contact with dangerous persons in dangerous situations.”

The public lecture which was organised by the Advancement Office of the university, headed by Mr. Yakubu Gomos, was attended by the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Hayward Mafuyai and a former field commander of the defunct ECOMOG, retired General Joshua Dogonyaro.

The police chief said in spite of operating in inherent hostile policing environment, the Nigeria Police had shown unwavering commitment to the duty of guaranteeing the safety of the lives and property of the citizens.
