Police Games: AIG Zone 2 recommends athletes who broke records for promotion

The officers and men of Zone 2, Nigeria Police, who excelled at the recent 11th Nigeria Police Games in Abuja, have been recommended for promotion to their next rank. AIG Bala Hassan who heads the zone made the disclosure at a reception to honour the athletes on Wednesday at the Police College, Ikeja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the zone came first at the competition with 231 medals, comprising 97 gold, 77 silver and 58 bronze. NAN also reports that 12 zones and the Force Headquarters, Abuja, took part in the one-week biennial competition which started on March 19 and ended March 26.

Hassan assured the athletes who broke past records that their letters of recommendation for promotion would be forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Solomon Arase for action.

He promised to work to ensure that they were promoted to the next level, adding that all the participants would be given letters of commendation.

They have done well by making the zone and themselves proud at the Games. They did exceedingly well I must say.

I will ensure that the recommendation letters get to the I-G as soon as possible,’’ Hassan said.

DCP Awosola Awotinde, the zone’s Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Games, thanked Hassan for his fatherly support throughout the planning stages and execution of the Games.

Awotinde said that the Games were meant to encourage officers and men to showcase their talents.

The Games are also aimed at ensuring that our personnel are in good shape in view of physical and psychological demands of policing,’’ he said.

There talents will contribute to the overall sports development of our country.

He added that the celebration was to fulfill the promises to the athletes prior to the competition.

This gathering today is to say we are men of our words. We promised the athletes they that will be celebrated if they emerge victorious.

I thank the Commissioners of Police of Lagos and Ogun states for their financial and moral support.

We are grateful to the Commandant of the Police College, Ikeja, who availed the athletes the use of the college’s facilities to prepare for the Games,’’ he said.
